Did You Know?
The Ojibwe creation story of Turtle Island teaches that even the smallest acts of courage can shape the future. While many powerful animals were unable to retrieve the soil needed to create new land after the great flood, it was the humble muskrat who succeeded. Though the journey cost the muskrat its life, the handful of earth it returned with was placed on the turtle's back, where it grew into the world we know today.
This timeless teaching reminds us that perseverance, selflessness, and cooperation are often the greatest sources of strength. Through Patrick Hunter's vibrant Woodland-inspired artwork, this coin honours the enduring wisdom of Indigenous storytelling and the deep connection between people, the land, and all living creatures.

Turtle Island Design – Ojibwe Creation Story
The reverse, created by Ojibwe artist Patrick Hunter, beautifully illustrates the Ojibwe creation story of Turtle Island through his distinctive Woodland-inspired art style. At the heart of the design is the courageous muskrat, whose sacrifice made it possible for new life to emerge, while the great turtle carries flourishing trees, flowers, and the Tree of Life as symbols of renewal, balance, and the interconnectedness of all living things. Above, the radiant sun represents hope and the beginning of a new world. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, designed by Canadian artist Steven Rosati. Patrick Hunter is an Ojibwe painter and graphic designer from Red Lake, Ontario, whose work is deeply rooted in Indigenous culture, storytelling, and the natural world. Drawing inspiration from the timeless Woodland art style, his vibrant creations celebrate the spiritual connection between people, animals, and the land.
