As a global frontrunner in crafting precious metal collectible coins, coin notes, and foils, it has launched acclaimed series in partnership with several worldwide brands, including Disney, Lucasfilms (Star Wars™), Star Trek, Warner Bros (covering DC Comics, Looney Tunes, THE LORD OF THE RINGS™, and HARRY POTTER™), Halo, Street Fighter™, among others.
Every collectible coin from the New Zealand Mint is a Proof coin, representing the highest quality a mint can achieve. Proof coins are renowned for their unmatched sharpness and brilliance. Crafted with exceptional precision, these coins feature intricate details that stand out clearly. They are the ideal choice for anyone looking to purchase or gift a coin that showcases top-tier craftsmanship and detailed design.
Proof coins are made through a process where two dies press against a blank metal piece. One die carries the coin's front (obverse) design, and the other bears the design for the back (reverse). Each die is meticulously hand-finished to eliminate any flaws before being used for coin production. The blank is struck multiple times, up to six, at a slower speed and with less force compared to other coin finishes. This repeated striking ensures the metal fills every detail of the die, resulting in a coin with a smoother, more precise finish and intricately detailed imagery.
Each coin is officially approved by the issuing country, and features the country's effigy—often the Queen's head or the Coat of Arms—on the obverse side, granting it legal tender status within that country.
Furthermore, the government specifies the production limit for these coins, known as the mintage. As a result, the coins become limited editions because no more can legally be produced beyond this number. Proof coins are typically produced in lower quantities compared to other commemorative coins, adding to their rarity and desirability.
